William Thomas Thorne Seccombe was born on 28 Feb 1873 at Paterson, New South Wales, a son to George William Raby Thorne Seccombe and Amy Annie Seccombe (nee Naylor).
It appears after his discharge from serving with the 2nd Queensland Mounted Infantry in the South African (Boer) War he returned to South Africa. He married Mary Lynch on 7 Aug 1902 at Bloemfontein, Orange Free State, South Africa and they had four children. He may have known Mary from his war service during which the 2nd QMI were ordered to arrest the Lynch clan and take them to Bloemfontein. He initially worked as a sports journalist on the Johannesburg Star before moving and settling the family in Durban.
