Private Valentine Shakes twin brother of Mr. G. J Shakes, of the Hydraulic Engineer's Department, is serving in the Canadian 5th Battalion, and has been in the trenches 15 months. He went right through the Ypres battle and took part in many other engagements, but up to the time he last wrote to his brother he had not received even a scratch. Mr. Shakes also went scathless through the Boer war with the Western Australian 5th Contingent. He is a son of the late Mr. James Shakes, of Kapunda, of Bagot, Shakes and Lewis, and a brother of Mrs. W. C. Martin, of Kapunda, and went to Canada about two years after the Boer war.
