Joseph Shann (birth registration) was also known as Joseph Patrick Shann (death registration).
When he enlisted as Joseph Shann in 1901 and was entered in the original nominal roll for the 5th Qld Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives, his N.O.K. was recorded as his mother Mrs. John Shann, George St, Sydney. Note- in Murray's compilation of all the nominal rolls of States that sent contingents to South Africa there is only one entry for a soldier with the surname Shann, the above Joseph Shann.
The 5th QIB embarked from Brisbane on 6 Mar 1901 for South Africa aboard S.S. Templemore. The Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 3 p. 150, notes he was invalided back to Australia aboard S.S. Britannic arriving in Brisbane on 6 Aug 1901 with discharge on 13 Aug 1901.
It appears he then returned to, or joined, the permanent military forces in NSW with the NSW Regiment Royal Australian Artillery, No. 3260 Gunner Joseph Patrick Shann. A report in the NSW Police Gazette and Weekly Record of Crime, 18 Jun 1902, p. 251, indicated he was wanted for desertion of his post and in the process misappropriating with some clothing items belonging to other comrades. The report described him as... 24 years of age, 5 feet 8 1/2 inches high, light-brown hair, blue eyes, medium complexion; a labourer...served 7 months in Queensland Bushmen; under 3 months' service.
His birth was recorded as Joseph Shann on 5 Jun 1878 at Sydney, a son to James Shann and Hannah Shann (nee Jackson). As Joseph P. Shann he married Amy Georgina Fletcher in 1907 at Sydney and they had 2 children. When he passed in 1954 he was recorded on the NSW BDM death register as Joseph Patrick Shann.
