Bertram (Burt) Ormond Shepherd was born in Melbourne, Victoria, the 4th of 5 sons of Lewis Littlejohn Shepherd and Ann (Annie) Lucinda Gurney.
Burt served witht the 5th QLD Imperial Bushmen in the Boer War (Private; Service No: 328). He remained in Cape Town, South Africa at the end of the War, and arrived in Newport, Virginia, USA on board the Doane Castle on 6 April 1904.
In his Naturalisation Application in Los Angeles, California, USA on 28 December 1906, Burt stated his Occupation as Assistant Surveyor,
He and his wife Alice (Minnie) Williamson travelled widely as Actors/Variety Artists, including to London where his daughter Vivian was born in 1912. Burt and Minnie worked in Sydney, NSW (1916), in Havana, Cuba (1918) and Buenos Aires, Argentina (1921). They resided in St Louis, Missouri, USA in 1918 and 1919.
