Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Served in the South African (Boer) war and also served in WW1, Driver S.N. 2580, Divisional Ammunition Column Section 1, AIF.

When Frederick Sinclair enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. A. Sinclair, 20 Romany Rd, West Norwood, Surrey, England.

He was severly wounded near Amersfoort during the battle of Onverwacht when shot in the left buttock, leaving permanent injury to his left side mainly affecting his left leg. In the Boer War Service Paybooks 5th QIB, Bk 3 p. 51, it is noted he was granted a part pension after discharge.

In 1914 he was residing in Sydney when he enlisted again for WW1. On his Attestation Paper, dated 28 Aug 1914, it is noted that; he was born at Norwood, Surrey, England and was 38 years of age (he had lowered his age); he was single with the occupation of bushman; he had no N.O.K.; and he had previously served in South Africa in the Qld Bushmen.

It was noted in a medical report during his WW1 service, dated 28 Dec 1916, that his age at his last birthday was actually 55. The additional comment was added that "He is 55 years of age, but does not look his age" which may explain why he was able to claim he was 38 when he enlisted in 1914. The report also notes that he was suffering debility due to injuries to his left leg sustained as a result of him being wounded in the Boer war.

The last records of his address was at Darlinghurst, Sydney, after his discharge in 1917 when he unsucessfully applied for a war disability pension relating to his WW1 service, dismissed due to the injury being a result of his Boer war service.
