Dielemann Jacob Smith was born 17 Feb 1879 in Queensland, a son to Dielemann Smith and Elizabeth Smith (nee Mandall). He was residing in Hendon, Queensland, when he enlisted. He married Annie Louisa Kirby on 11 Aug 1901 in Warwick, Queensland and they had 1 child.

He worked as a railway porter in Warwick, Gympie, Brisbane and Toowoomba, and as a train conductor in Brisbane until his retirement.
