When Edmund Brierley Smith enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. E. B. Smith, monkland, Gympie, Qld. He was born in 1876 in Northhamptonshire, England, a son to Edmund Brierley Smith and Katherine Smith (nee Turk). Following his Boer war service he returned to Gympie. He married Mary Bridget Briere on 17 Apr 1918 and they had at least one child.
