NOK Mr. J.F. SMITH, Lowood

Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

It appears the Boer War Nominal Roll compiled by Murray records this soldiers name incorrectly. The original Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB held by Qld State Archives, for the entry of soldier S.N. 26, records him as Norman Victor Flewell-Smith. His older brother Malcolm Flewell-Smith had also served as a Private S.N. 121 in the 2nd Queensland Mounted Infantry.

When Norman Victor Flewell-Smith enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published (as Acting Corporal Flewell Smith) with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as J. F. Smith, Lowood. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, bk 1 p. 45, where he is recorded as Norman Victor Flewell-Smith, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. J. Flewell-Smith, Orchard Farm, Lowood.

Norman Victor Flewell-Smith (recorded as Norman Victor Smith on BDM Qld Birth Register online) was born on 6 Jun 1881 in Queensland, a son to John Flewell Smith and Emily Harriett Smith (nee Parton).

In his Obituray published in The Queensland Times, 21 Dec 1953, it was noted his parents were early pioneers of the Lowood district raising their family on the family farm 'Orchard Farm' on the Lockyer Creek at Lowood. It also noted he served in the Boer War during which he was wounded and due to injuries recieved he lost a foot. The Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB note he was awarded a disability pension for a period of 12 months. He had been living at Urangan with his sister May for a period prior to his passing at Maryborough in 1953.
