George Smith served twice in the South African (Boer) War, first as a Private S.N. 55 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, second as a Private S.N. 602 in the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen (source AWM Boer War Nominal Roll, Murray p. 480 & 518).
Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey
When George Smith enlisted in 1900 in the 4th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 19 May 1900, he noted his N.O.K. as being at Hooper's Court, Knightsbridge, London. In his entry on the original nominal roll for the 4th Queensland Contingent, held by National Archives, it is noted the above address was the last known address of his parents.
He was invalided and returned to Australia from the 4th QIB where he was discharged in Brisbane on 14 Mar 1901. In the Boer war Service Paybooks for the 4th QIB, Bk 4 p. 70, his address post discharge was noted as c/- Mr. Blunt, Princess St, Coorparoo.
He later joined the 6th QIB and was selected in the 1st Draft that embarked some 4 months after the main 6th QIB contingent for South Africa. The men of the draft had in the main served with previous contingents in South Africa and were being sent as reinforcements for the 5th and 6th QIB contingents already in South Africa.
The men of the draft were not recorded on the original nominal foll for the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent held by National Archives. He was, however, recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 4 p. 40, where it is noted he directed part of his pay to Mrs. Isabella Blunt, Princess St, Coorparoo, East Brisbane.
Unfortunately neither of the two paybook entries indicate what relationship he may have had to the Blunt's.
