George Thomas Smith was born on 26 Sep 1875 in Mackay, a son to John Smith and Rose Smith (nee Collins) and one of five children. His father John being a pioneer of the Mackay district.

He joined and embarked with the 1st Queensland Mounted Infantry in 1899 for the South African (Boer) War. Suffering from Rheumatism he was invalided back to Australia arriving in Jun 1900. Due to ongoing ill health he worked light jobs up until his death in 1922.
