Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Harold Herbert Kennedy Smith is also recorded as Harold Kennedy Smith and Harold Hubert Kennedy Smith.

When he enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published (under Harold Hubert Kennedy Smith) with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. Smith, Clayfield, Brisbane. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 2 p. 117, he is entered as Harold Hubert Kennedy Smith and it is noted payment was to a joint account held with Theresa M. Smith. The paybooks also noted his address as Longreach.

Qld BDM birth and death registers record him as Harold Kennedy Smith, and as Harold Hubert Kennedy Smith on the marriage register. He was born on 21 Oct 1879 in Queensland, a son to Charles Edwin Smith and Theresa Margaret Smith (nee Kennedy). He married Ruby Estelle Barnett on 2 Mar 1908 at All Saints' Church, Spring Hill, Brisbane and they had 2 children. They resided initially in Brisbane then later in Cairns and Innisfail where he was an accountant.
