18 Aug 1902: Discharged Australian and Colonial Military Forces - Boer War Contingents, Corporal, 193, 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Remained in hospital in South Africa when 5th QIB returned. Qld State Archives- Boer War Service Paybooks 5th QUB notes later returning to Australia arriving Brisbane 11 Aug 1902, discharged 18 Aug 1902.

When Albert Thomas Smythe enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father H. Smythe, Glenfallen, Warwick. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB held by Qld State Archives it was noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. A. Smythe, Warwick.

Albert Thomas Smythe was born on 15 Dec 1880 in Queensland, a son to Henry Thomas Smythe and Eliza Annie Smythe (nee Lawson). He married  Elizabeth Annie O'Brien on 18 Sep 1907 at Warwick and they had 3 children.
