Son of William and Jessie (Barber) Sproat.

Sergeant J. B. Sproat (late manager of Mollie station), B Squadron of Bushmen's Contingent, has been appointed quartermaster-sergeant.

LONDON, September 26. 1902 — On Monday last the freedom of the Royal burgh of Kircudbright was conferred upon a number of local worthies who have done honor to the burgh by their deeds in South Africa. Among the recipients were Captain Hope, R.A., Captain the Master of Ruthven, D.S.O., and Quartermaster-Sergeant J. B. Sproat, of the Australian Bushmen.

Appears to have returned to Scotland and married Elizabeth Kirkwood at Glasgow, Scotland 7th July 1911
