His surname also appears as Stevenson on documents associated with his attempt to enlist for WW1- S.N. Depot. He was discharged prior to embarking for WW1 as medically unfit.
When William Stephenson enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his sister S. Stephenson, Pickett's Hotel, Edward Street, Brisbane. In the original nominal roll for the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives, his sister is recorded as F. Stephenson. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 3 p. 75, his address after discharge was recorded as c/- Mrs. Elliott, 475 Bankside, North Quay, Brisbane.
A WW1 service record file is held by National Archives for his enlistment and discharge prior to embarking. There are a number of Attestation Papers on file, some dated 4 Mar 1916 and 11 Apr 1917. On some he noted there were no relatives in Australia and he nominated a friend in Bundaberg as N.O.K., and on others he nominated his father in Scotland.
He enlisted for WW1 under the name William Stevenson in 1916/17 with the the Attestation Papers indicating that; he was born at Beath, or Beith, Glasgow, Scotland and he was 43 years old in 1916; he was single, and had been a sailor and labourer; there were no relatives in Australia with his N.O.K. being his father R. Stevenson, Maclean St, Glasgow; and he had previously served in South Africa with the 5th QIB. It is noted that in Murray's compilation of the Boer War nominal rolls there is only a William Stephenson recorded as serving with the 5th QIB.
William Stephenson (alt Stevenson) was born in about 1873 at Glasgow, Scotland, a son to R. Stevenson. On his application to enlist for WW1 on 3 Mar 1916 he indicated he was living at Woongarra St, Bundaberg and working as a sailor.
