Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When Philip Graham Annandale Stewart enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published (under Philip Stewart) with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as Mrs. A. Stewart, East Melbourne. The Boer War Service Paybooks 5th QIB Bk 2, p. 38, held by the Qld State Archives have him entered as Philip Stewart and noted that he was allowed to disembark the ship on return to Australia in Melbourne if in "good health" where it appears his mother was residing.

He was born on 11 Jun 1881 (recorded by BDM Qld as Graham Philip Annandale Stewart) in Queensland, a son to Alexander Gore Stewart and Annie Rebecca Stewart (nee Annandale). It appears he identified himself as Philip or Phil throughout his life.

In an article, Short Sportfolios by "The Sportographer", appearing in both The Week (Brisbane) and The Telegraph (Brisbane) newspapers, 3 Dec 1932, a biography of his early professional life is recorded under the name Phil Stewart. At the time he had just completed 2 years as the Secretary of the Tattersall's Club in Brisbane.

He was educated at Breakfast Creek School and Birsbane Grammar School before commencing work with Webster & Co. After serving in the South African War he returned to his native Brisbane before joining the Dunlop Rubber Co. in Melbourne for 2 years, then Adelaide 2 years and Western Australia 10 years returning to Brisbane in 1919. He was later working in Sydney when he was appointed as Secretary of Tattersall's Club Qld in Nov 1931.
