Ralph Stewart was born on 10 Jan 1880 at Ipswich, Queensland, a son to Ralph Stewart and Flora Stewart (nee McAlister). He married Rose Maria Kearney in 1925 in New Zealand.
He was a Saddler by trade when he enlisted for the first time in the South African (Boer) War in which he would serve twice. First service was as a Saddler S.N. 367 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Second service was as a Private S.N. 814 in the 1st Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse.
On his return to Australia he undertook various occupations including Policeman, Tram Driver and Engineer. He moved to NewZealand where he would marry and operate a hotel in Wellington. He also became involved with race horses owning champion New Zealand bred racehorse Beau Vite which ran in 3 Melbourne Cups.
