Leo was born 26 February 1867 in Birmingham the son of Reuben Joseph Stockall (Music teacher) and Agnes Sarah nee Chalk. The family arrived in Melbourne initially on board the Alexandra in 1876 and seven years later moved to Sydney. Leo was a shearer.

He married Kate Richardson an East Yorkshire girl in 1908 in Stanmore.  Kate had arrived from England with her father and siblings  on board the the ship Superb out of London in 1884.

Leo's time in the 3rd Australian Commonwealth Horse as a saddler in Natal, South Africa was short but he was awarded the Queen's Medal with one clasp.

He returned to Sydney and family on board the SS Coolgardie in August 1902. He died February 1943 and was cremated at Rookwood Cemetery.
