103 years ago today, on the 26th September 1917, Lance Corporal Peter Feenan, 53rd Battalion (Reg No-77), labourer and rugby league player from Newcastle Street, East Maitland, New South Wales, fell at the Battle of Polygon Wood during the Passchendaele Campaign, age 25.

No Roll of Honour circular summited.

Born at East Maitland, New South Wales on the 25th August 1892 to John (died 1945) and Mary Ann (died 1926) Feenan of 42 Union Street, Tighes Hill, New South Wales and 3 Tighes Terrace Street, Tighes Hill, N.S.W., Peter enlisted January 1916 with the 35th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Transferred to the 53rd Battalion - 10.10.1916.

Mr Feenan’s name has been inscribed on The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 29), Belgium.
Peter’s name has also been inscribed on the magnificent East Maitland War Memorial (photos, unveiled on the 25th April (Anzac Day) 1923, 220 names inscribed, 45 fell). Name not inscribed on the East Maitland Public School Roll of Honour. Name possibly inscribed on the East Maitland Municipal District Roll of Honor (please send to me a photo).

There is no memorial inscription on his parent’s headstone to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, so on the 24th September 2017 I was joined by Feenan descendants to honour the supreme sacrifice of Peter with the placing of a memorial cross. CATHOLIC 1-25. 74.
