Add my storyBiography contributed by Claude McKelvey
When John Stoneham enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as W. H. Stoneham, Peel St, Mackay. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, Bk 2 p. 182, he is entered under the name John E. Stoneham, and it is noted he directed part of his pay to his father Mr. W. H. Stoneham, Peel St, Mackay.
John Edward Stoneham was born on 9 Apr 1880 at Mackay, Queensland, a son to William Henry Stoneham and Mary Stoneham (nee Steedman). He was twice married. He first married Elizabeth Daly on 10 Jan 1905 in Queensland and they had 2 children before Elizabeth passed in 1908. He then married Matilda Albietz on 20 May 1911 in Queensland and they had 5 children.
When he passed at Townsville in 1952 obituaries were published in The Townsville Daily Bulletin and The Daily Mercury (Mackay), with the following information extracted from them.
He was born in Mackay, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Stoneham who hade emigrated from England. He spent his childhood in Mackay and on finishing school worked on the staff of the "Mercury" as a compositor. On the outbreak of the Boer war he enlisted with the 6th Queensland Infanrty Brigade and saw active service in South Africa. After his discharge he came to Proserpine and secured a position on the sugar mill staff where he remained until he retired in 1951. He had also purchased a farm in the Glen Isla district which he sold in 1946.
He was an active member in the Buffalo Lodge and with the local sub-branch of the Returned Servicemans Association. At the age of 73 he had been ailing for some time, having been recently in Proserpine hospital before arriving in Townsville where his sudden passing came as a shock to family.
