Arthur Sturgess was born in 1875 (he changed his date of birth to enlist in WW2 to 28 Nov 1880) in the Horsham District, Victoria, a son to James Sturgess and Fanny Sturgess (nee Parsons).

He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW2. First service was as a Private S.N. 137 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private S.N. Q187192 in the 1 Garrison Battalion (Qld), WW2.

He married Lucy Goodwin Tanswell and they lived in the Chinchilla area where they raised their children.
