Herbert Suthers served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 173, 1st Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private S.N. 2267, 2nd Australian Remount Unit, AIF, WW1. His younger brother Thomas Suthers, also served in the Boer War as a Private S.N. 335, 7th Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse.
When he enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Private H. Suthers, single, Red Hill (at Gympie). In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 109, it notes he served the full tour of the 1st QMI returning with the contingent aboard the Orient to Brisbane where he was discharged on 23 Jan 1901.
He enlisted again in 1915 for WW1 and on his Attestation Paper, dated 29 Oct 1915, it is noted that; he was born at Gympie and was 39 years 8 months of age, he was married with 4 children and a butcher; his N.O.K. was his wife Jane Suthers, Kandanga; and he had previously served with the 1st Queensland Contingent in South Africa.
Herbert Suthers was born on 15 Feb 1877 at Gympie, a son to Bennett Suthers and Emy Suthers (nee Wise). He married Jane Slaughter on 13 Dec 1905 in Queensland and they had 4 children.
When he passed in 1935 an obituray was published in The Townsville Daily Bulletin, 27 Jun 1935. It records that he had served in the Boer War with the 1st Contingent and following his return had established a butchering business at Mary River Valley (Kandanga). He was still in that business when he enlisted for WW1. A few years after his return from WW1 in 1918, he relocated north taking up a cane farming and grazing property at Coolbie, north of Townsville, where he resided for 15 years prior to his passing.
