Served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Private S.N. 284 in the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Second service was as a Private S.N. 365 in the 7th Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse.
When Quinton Leitch (Leith) Anderson Symington enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father, Walts St, Greenock, Scotland. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 2 p. 131, it is noted he directed part of his pay to Miss J. Whitson, Tully St, Ross Island, Townsville.
While serving with the 5th QIB he was severely wounded in Dec 1901 and was invalided back to Australia where he was discharged in Brisbane on 11 Apr 1902. He then re-enlisted at Wilston, Brisbane, on 9 May 1902 with the 7th Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse.
On his Attestation Form he noted; he was born at Greenock (Scotland) and was aged 32 years and 6 months; was single and a bushman; his N.O.K. was his father J. Symington, Walt St, Greenock; and he had previously served in the 5th QIB. His details were also published with the rank and file of the 7BACH in The Queenslander, 31 May 1902, where under N.O.K. he gave Mr. Maor, Tank St, Brisbane (which was noted on his Attestation Form as where he was actually residing).
Quinton Leitch Anderson Symington (recorded as Quinten Anderson Symington) was born on 10 Jul 1866 at Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland, a son to John Symington and Mary Symington (nee Wilson).
