William John Thomasson was born on 4 Nov 1877 at Rochford near Cherters Towers, Queensland, a son to John Storey Thomasson and Janet Cooper Thomasson (nee Winterbottom or Laurensen).

After his return from his Boer War service he married Margaret Thompson on 29 Dec 1909 and they made their way to Cairns in 1912, they had two children. He worked for the Railway Department in Cairns for 27 years before retiring due to ill health.
