Add my storyBiography contributed by Claude McKelvey
When Alfred Thompson enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father W. J. Thompson, Queen St., Brisbane.
In March 1904, newspapers reported on the death of an Alfred Thompson who was "formerly a member of the 5th Queensland Contingent". In his compliation of the AWM Boer War Nominal Roll, Murray, records only one Alfred Thompson as having served in the 5th QIB. Based on the newspaper reports and Qld BDM birth/death registers it appears his father's name (initials) may have been subject to a typographical error.
Alfred Thompson was born on 21 Jun 1877 in Queensland, a son to John Harwood Thompson and Agnes Thompson (nee Miller).
The Brisbane Courier, 14 Mar 1904, reported his death as being suicide reulting from a self inflicted gun shot. The report noted he had once been employed in the Grocery trade but had been out of work for some time which was presumed to be the motive for the death. The report indicated he was about 28 years old at the time and was a former member of the 5th QIB.
