Death Of Sister A. Thomson
Nursing Veteran
Sister Annie Thomson, who died on Tuesday at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, where she trained and worked for many years, was one of the best known nurses in Victoria early in the century. Sister Thomson was born in Tasmania 88 years ago. After training at the Alfred Hospital, she went as a nurse to the Boer War in 1901. After returning to Australia and nursing at the Alfred Hospital for a short time she went to South Africa to take charge of the hospital at Johannesburg. Returning to Australia, she became matron of the Cottage Hospital at New Norfolk, and later was in charge of the Waratah Hospital.
Shortly before the First World War she returned to the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, and trained many nurses who saw service with the original AIF in France and Palestine. After her retirement she lived with her sister in Malvern (V). The body was cremated at Melbourne yesterday.
