Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

He served in the South African (Boer) War and enlisted again for WW1 but was discharged as medically unfit before embarking.

When Thomas Morgan Tierney enlisted in 1901, he was part of a draft of men established to follow, and embarked some four days after, the main 5th QIB contingent to South Africa. The men in the draft were not included in the original nominal roll for the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives. He is however, included in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 4 p. 14, where it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. M. A. Tierney, "The Hut", Western Rd, Parramatta, NSW.

He enlisted again in 1916 for WW1 but was later found medically unfit and discharged before embarking. On his Attestation Paper, dated 11 Feb 1916, it was noted that; he was born at Sydney, NSW, and was 44 years 6 months of age; he was married and a horse trainer; his N.O.K. was his wife Mrs. Catherine Tierney, Laidley, Qld; and he had previously served with the 5th QIB in South Africa.

Thomas Morgan Tierney was born on 29 Jun 1869 at Sydney, NSW, a son to Joseph John Tierney and Mary Ann Tierney (nee Larden). He married Catherine Josephine Howe on 17 Jan 1901 at St Bridget's Roman Catholic Church, Rosewood, and they had 5 children. He lived and worked as a tailor in Ipswich and Rosewood before settling with his family in Laidley.
