George Matthew Trower served twice in the South African (Boer) War, first as a Private S.N. 200 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, and second as a Private S.N. 660 in the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen (1st Draft).

On his second service newspaper reports indicate he remained in South Africa for further service after the rest of the contingent returned to Australia. A later newspaper report has him with the last contingent to return to Australia aboard the Manchester Merchant disembarking in Adelaide and traveling by train back to Ipswich Qld, arriving before the troopship docked in Brisbane on 2 Aug 1902, his date of discharge is not given.
