When James Campbell Turnbull enisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Private J. C. Turnbull, single, Netherby, Warwick. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 113, it was noted that his contact details after discharge were via his brother N. S. Turnbull from the property "Glen Reagh", Lord John Swamp, via Warwick. This was a crucial piece of information in forming this Bio as outlined further below. He served the full tour of the 1st QMI returning to Brisbane where he was discharged on 23 Jan 1901.
James Campbell Turnbull was born at Benalla, Victoria, in 1876, a son to James Turnbull and Janet Williamson Turnbull (nee Rose). He married Annie Hallam Bowe on 6 Apr 1910 at Texas, Qld and it appears they had no children. The marriage notice in newspapers noted James was from Warwick and Annie from Texas.
His father James was a native of Tasmania and had married 3 times. He first married in Tasmania in 1864 to Caroline Gibson and had relocated to Benalla, Victoria by 1865, where their 3 children were born. This included their son Norman Stewart Turnbull in 1868. Norman was the older half brother of James Campbell Stewart noted in the service paybooks previously. His father's first wife, Caroline, passed in Victoria in 1873.
His father then married a second time to Janet Williamson Rose in Victoria in 1875. He had one child with Janet, the subject of this bio James Campbell Turnbull in 1876 at Benalla, with Janet passing in the same year. His father married for a third time to Emma Sanderson in Victoria in 1876 and they had a further 4 children while also residing at Benalla.
When James Campbell Turnbull's father, James, passed in 1907 at Warwick in Qld, several obituaries were published in newspapers. Theses noted that his father was born in Tasmania and for many years had persued pastoral interests at Benalla in Victoria where he had frequent run-ins with the Kelly gang. He had relocated his family to Dalveen near Warwick around 1890 where he took over the station "Glen Tanna". He had retired to the property "Glen Reagh" at Lord John Swamp outside Warwick run by his son Norman Stewart Turnbull. On passing he left 8 children.
