Charles Turner served twice in the South African (Boer) War, first as a Private (rising to rank of Corporal) S.N. 211 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, and second as a Sergeant S.N. 1911 in the 3rd Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse (source AWM Boer War Nominal Rol, Murray p. 483 & 527).
