James was born in Wyalong near Lake Cargelligo, New South Wales, AustraliaBorn 2 days after his parents marriage on 31 Jul 1882. James and Sarah moved to Young not long after and the remaining children were born in Young.

Age: 19 Military - Sydney New South Wales 2nd Boer War1899-1902. James enlisted 16 Jan 1902-Trooper No. 329 1st Australian Commonwealth Horse (1st ACH)-3 contingents raised by the new Commonwealth in 1901embarking 1902 so most arrived too late for action or still at sea at War's end on 31 May 1902

Age: 34 Melbourne, Victoria WW1 - Embarkment on HMAT A1 Hymettus in Melbourne. James was Acting Corporal & was part of Corporal Unit from Nominal Roll 7th Light Horse Regiment, 21st Reinforcement AWM. Destination Middle East. His son Lance only 7mths old.

Sydney or Melbourne James returned from Middle East. His son Lance was 3yrs 7months & had not seen his father for 3 yrs. James wife, Alice May had to take care of 4 very small children when he went to War in Sept 1916.
