Thomas Paul Volkman served twice in the South African (Boer) War, first as a Private S.N. 156 in the (4th) Queensland Imperial Bushmen, and second as a Private (promoted to Quartermaster-Sergeant) S.N. 156 in the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushman (source AWM Boer War Nominal Roll p. 482, 513).

When Thomas Paul Volkman re-enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. C. Volkman, Spring Hill. He was born on 4 Mar 1877 in Queensland, a son to Charles Emil Volkmann and Caroline Volkman (nee Scholz/Schultz). He was one of two children and his birth is recorded by BDM Qld under the name Paul Thomas Volkman with his older brother under the name Paul George Volkman. He married (under the name of Thomas Paul Volkman) Annie Eliza Cummings on 27 May 1914 and they had one child.
