Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

James Wakefield also served in WW1, Private S.N. 2392, 2nd Light Horse Regiment AIF.

When James Wakefield enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. C. Wakefield, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane.

He enlisted for WW1 under the name James Joseph Wakefield at which time he appears to have lowered his age. He enlisted in Mar 1915 but did not embark and appears to have been discharged due to being AWOL. He enlisted again Sept 1915 in the 2nd Light Horse Regiment and this time embarked. On his Attestation Paper dated 12 Sep 1915 he noted that; he was 42 years old born in Brisbane and working as a clerk; his N.O.K. was his mother Mrs Catherine Wakefield, Bowen Hills, Brisbane; and he had previously served in the Boer War for 2 years.

James Wakefield was born on 5 Oct 1866 at Brisbane, a son to Henry Wakefield and Catherine Wakefield (nee Daurking or Durkin as spelt on her marriage/death registration). He married Margaret Storer on 10 Sep 1931 in Queensland with the marriage registration noting he was James known as James Joseph Wakefiled.
