Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Note- while Murray in his compilation of the AWM Boer War Nominal Roll records him as Albert Harvy Wales, newspaper reports of his departure from England and arrival in Queensland to serve with the Queensland Defence Force (QDF) record him as Albert Harry Wales, and newspaper reports of the rank and file for the 1st QMI contingent for the Boer War record him as Albert Henry Wales

He was serving with the Royal Artillery in England when in 1898 he was nominated by the War Office for service with the QDF, as reported in Queensland newspapers.

Agent-General Annual Report for 1898: Appointments of Non-commissioned Officers.The Telegraph (Brisb), 12 Jun 1899, p. 3.

The following non-commissioned officers were nominted by the War Office for service with the Queensland Defence Force; Corporal Albert Harry Wales, R. A., as battery sergeant-major, Queensland Permanent Artillery; left in the s.s. Oruba on April 29, 1898.

Queensland Defence Force- The Queenslander, 25 Jun 1898, p. 1242.

The following notifications appeared in General Orders Land Forces, published in Saturday's "Government Gazette":-...Sergeant A. H. Wales, Royal Artillery, having reported for duty on arrival from England, is appointed battery sergeant-major, Queensland Mounted Infantry.

Shortly after his arrival in Queensland the Boer War commenced. He was serving on the permanent staff of the QDF when he was appointed for service with the 1st Queensland Contingent (1st QMI). His details were published with the rank and file in the Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, where he was recorded under Staff as Quartermaster-sergeant A. Wales, Single, Victoria Barracks, Brisbane. In other newsapers such as The Telegraph (Brisb), 28 Oct 1899, he was recorded under his full name as Albert Henry Wales.

His Boer War Dossier, held by National Archives, notes he returned to Australia aboard Orient arriving in Brisbane on 16 Jan 1901 and was discharged on 23 Jan 1901. There is no indication on the record that he rejoined the permanent staff of the QDF after his discharge, so it is assumed that he returned to England.
