Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Note- full name Frederick William Wallis.

Murray, in his compilation of the AWM Boer War Nominal Roll on p. 504 to 505, notes members of the 5th QIB who enrolled/enlisted in South Africa.

F. W. Wallis enrolled in South Africa with the 5th QIB and as such was not recorded on the original nominal roll for the 5th Queensland (Imperial Bushmen) Contingent held by National Archives. He was however, recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks of the 5th QIB, Bk 4 p. 146, where it is noted his pay commenced from 6 Dec 1901, well after the 5th QIB had arrived on 1 Apr 1901. Its assumed he enrolled about 1 Dec 1901.

The paybooks note his contact details as 684 Toorak  Road, Toorak, Victoria. His father, Charles, had established a Chemist business in Toorak and newspaper advertisements in The Prahran Chronicle, 7 Jul 1900, p. 4, have the business trading from this address. The buisness would later become C. Wallis and Son when Frederick's older brother Cuthbert Charles Wallis qualified and joined his father in the business which continued to trade in Toorak.

When he passed in Jun 1954 his death registration noted he was 69 years of age which indicates he was born in the first half of 1885. This is the probable reason he travelled to South Africa, due to his young age to enroll in Dec 1901 and to pass himself off as being at least 17 years of age. The Brisbane Courier, 16 May 1902, reported that 543, Private F. W. Wallis, remained in South Africa for further service when the 5th QIB returned to Australia. It appears it was for only a couple of weeks with the paybooks noting he returned to Brisbane, aboard Columbian, arriving 15 May 1902 with discharge taken to be 5 May 1902 when the unit was disbanded.

Frederick William Wallis was born in 1885 at Toorak, Victoria, a son to Charles Wallis and Annie Wallis (nee Pullin). He married Agnes Stella White in 1912 in Victoria and they had 4 children. He worked in the wool trade with the firm Henry Caulliez for 40 years.
