Add my storyBiography contributed by Claude McKelvey
When Charles James Walsh enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. Walsh, Bayview Hotel, Scarborough, Redcliffe. in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 3 p. 21, it is noted part of his pay was directed to a joint account held with his mother Charlotte Walsh.
Charles James Walsh was born on 26 Aug 1877 at Brisbane, a son to William Walsh and Charlotte Walsh (nee Parrack). He married Edith Amelia Clinch on 7 Jun 1904 in Queensland and they had 1 child.
Charles' parents were well know hotel licencee's and had been the licensee of the Bendigo Hotel, George St., Brisbane, for 13 years up until 1883 when they moved on to become the licensee of the Bay View Hotel built in 1878 at Scarborough, Redcliffe. His father, William, passed in 1893 while they were running the hotel with his mother Charlotte continuing on and was the licensee when Charles enlisted in 1901.
Charles' trade/occupation was a fireman having joined the Central Fire Brigade (Brisbane) as a cadet in September 1896. After his discharge from the war he returned to that occupation and had been Superintendent in charge of No. 2 Station, Teneriffe, for 8 years prior to his passing in 1921.
He had been involved in fighting a major fire at the Brown's sawmills, Brown and Broard Timber Yard, throughout the night and at 7.30am the following morning, 29 Jun 1921, he collapsed at the scene and could not be revived. His death certificate reportedly gave the cause as heart failure due to exertion and excitement.
