Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

He is memorialised on the plaque containing names of members of the 5th Q.I.B. Contingent from Charters Towers at the Boer War Memorial Kiosk, Lissner Park, Charters Towers.

When William James Walsh enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. J. Walsh, Charters Towers. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 2 p. 121, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. Mary Walsh, Towers St, Charters Towers.

He was active sporting cyclist in Charters Towers when he enlisted and was assigned to the Cyclist Corps that were part of the 5th QIB. Newspaper reports following his return to Australia from South Africa note he returned to Charters Towers in Jun 1902.
