Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When William Waring enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as Mrs. J. Struthers, Newcastle-on-Tyne, England. On the original nominal roll for the 6th QIB Queensland Defence Force for service in South Africa, held by National Archives Australia, it notes his N.O.K. as his sister, Mrs. J. Struthers, Newcastle-on-Tyne.

He returned to Australia and was discharged at Brisbane on 14 Aug 1902. The Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, Bk 2 p. 86, note that after discharge he was provided with a pass to travel to Mackay on the SS Innamincka on 19 Aug 1902.
