Hedley Verner Watt was born on 16 Aug 1883 at Warwick, Queensland, a son to Joseph Watt and Emma Watt (nee Chambers). When he enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. J. Watt at Warwick. He married Carmel Mary McNamara in 1920 in New Zealand and they had at least 3 children.

He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 152 in the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. His second service was as a Private S.N. 10529 in the 11th Reinforcements, J Company, New Zealand Expiditionary Force, WW1. When he enlisted in 1916 he noted his N.O.K. as his brother W. J. Watt at Pratten, Queensland.
