When Donald Waugh enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as R. Waugh J.P., Cairns assumed to be his father Robert.

Donald Waugh was born on 29 Nov 1875 in England, a son to Robert Waugh and Emma Waugh. He married Sarah Eliza Owens on 4 Dec 1906 in Queensland and they had 5 children. Tragically their first born drowned in a watercourse near Innisfail in 1912. He worked in blacksmithing and sawmilling in the Innisfail district.

When he enlisted in 1915 for WW1 he noted in his Application for a Commission that; he was born 29 Nov 1875 and educated in the Public Schools England; was married to Sarah Eliza Waugh; was working in sawmilling and living in Innisfail; and had previously served with the Royal Welsh Fusileers in India and the 6th QIB in the Boer War.

After discharge from WW1 service he took up the position of a District Magistrate in Papua New Guinea (New Ireland and Rabaul). Following a long stint in PNG he retired to Sydney, NSW, where he passed in 1940 and his wife passed in 1966.
