Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey
Note- he was incorrectly recorded by Murray in the AWM Boer War Nominal Roll under the name A. G. Whipman for his second service in the 6th QIB.
Arthur Guy Whipham served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Private S.N. 231 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Second service was as as a Private S.N. 653 in the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen (1st Draft).
When he joined the 4th QIB in 1900 and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 19 May 1900, he noted his N.O.K. as Mr. Whipham, West End, South Brisbane. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 4th QIB, Bk 5 p. 27, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. Kate A. Whipham, c/- G.P.O. Brisbane. He served the full tour of the 4th QIB and returned to Brisbane where he was discharged 10 Aug 1901.
He almost immediately volunteered again and was selected in the First Draft of the 6th QIB and embarked again for South Africa on 20 Aug 1901. The members of the draft mainly consisted of men who had served in previous contingents in South Africa and were assembled as reinforcements for the 5th and 6th QIB contingents already in South Africa.
Men in the draft were not recorded in the original nominal roll for the 6th QIB. He was however, recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB (to which he was allotted), Bk 4 p. 89 (bottom half of page), under the correct surname of Whipham.
The Brisbane Courier, 16 May 1902, notes when the 5th QIB embarked to return to Australia that, S.N. 653, Private Arthur G. Whipham, remained in South Africa for further service. The Boer War Service Paybooks note he embarked to England to attend the Coronation ceremonies and returned to South Africa, but does not give a discharge or return to date in Australia.
Arthur Guy Whipham was born on 11 Nov 1878 at Brisbane, a son to Reginald Arthur Whipham and Catherine Angella Whipham (nee Carrigg). He never married and had a farm at Maleny which he sold in 1934 returning to Brisbane where he passed suddenly in 1936.
