Ambrose was the son of Mary and John White. He was born at Hoyelton on the 7th December, 1876. His occupation was a farmer on the family farm at Baroota.
He was 25 years 2 months of age. Physically he was 5’ 7’’ tall with a reddish complexion, yellowish blue eyes and brown hair. Ambrose presented himself for selection and applied for enrolment at Gladstone on 6 February 1902.
The final selection of 20 men required from this district for the Eighth Contingent was completed last evening. Over 60 men from all parts of the district applied for enrolment, and of the lot a very decent second 20 could easily be picked out. By special request of Lieut-Colonel Catt, the saluting officer, the Mayor, Mr. Hancock, assisted in the selection. Surgeon-Lieutenant Bennet conducted the medical examination, Capt. Sampson and Lieut. Builder the riding test, and Capt. Coe and Lieut. Goode superintended the shooting. There was no trouble in selecting the first 14 or 15, as their papers showed “riding good, doctor good, shooting good.” But it was a somewhat difficult matter to select about half-a-dozen from the remainder. The final shooting test yesterday, however, made the work of the selectors easy. Following are the names and addresses of those selected. …………...White, Ambrose John Alphonsus, Baroota………… .
Areas’ Express (Booyoolee, SA), Friday 7 February 1902
On 11 February Ambrose, along with the men selected at the country centres for the eighth contingent, reported for camp and paraded in the hall at the south of the Jubilee Oval. As a member of “C” Squadron, Fourth Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse, Ambrose embarked from Port Adelaide on 1st April 1902 in the transport ship “Templemore”.
Ambrose landed at Durban on 21 April and the battalion encamped there for two days before entraining to Newcastle and encamping at Kitchener’s Kop. Subsequently Fourth Battalion trekked, via Laing’s Nek and Majuba, to Volksrust. The unit then entrained to Elandsfontein where it encamped until ordered to return to Australia.
Ambrose embarked at Durban on 7 July in the transport “Norfolk” and arrived in Adelaide on 24 July. Ambrose’s unit was disbanded on 15 August.
