Corporal J H Whitelaw, who was missing for the ranks of the Tasmanian Contingent after the engagement at Drietfontein, is 48 years of ate. He was at one time a colour-sergeant in A Company Launceston Rifle Regiment, but he left the district for a time, and on his return rejoined the same corps as a private. His private occupation was for some time that of house steward at the Launceston Hospital, but when he volunteered for service in South Africa he was a member of the clerical staff of Messrs. Fairhorne & Sons, wholesale chemists, Launceston. Corporal Whitelaw is married. His and and one child (a daughter0 now reside in Launceston, Whitelaw left as a private with the first Tasmanian Contingent under Captain (now Major) C.S. Cameron. He was promoted to the rank of corporal in South Africa, and has been mentioned in despatches for special bravery.
