When Andrew Whiteside enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as Miss F. Peherdy, Breakfast Creek Rd, Brisbane. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 3 p. 117, it is noted he directed part of his pay to Miss Florence R. Peberdy, Breakfast Creek Rd, Newstead.
Andrew Whiteside was born in 1878 in Blantyre, Scotland, a son to Andrew Whiteside and Elizabeth Whiteside (nee Chalmers). He married Florence Rebekah Peberdy on 1 Mar 1901 in Queensland and they made their home in the farming town of Proston and had 6 children.
When he enlisted in the 5th QIB they had not yet married with their marriage occuring on 1 Mar 1901, a few days before Andrew embarked for South Africa on 6 Mar 1901. Their wedding notice was published in The Telegraph (Brisb) and noted that Andrew was the son of the late Andrew Whiteside of Blantyre, Scotland, and Florence (Florrie) was the daughter of the late Henry Peberdy, of Leicester, England.
