Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey
When Frederick Charles Whitford enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as Mrs. A. Whitford, Shoeburyness, England. In the original nominal roll for the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by Ntional Archives, his N.O.K. is recorded as being his mother.
In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, Bk 1 p. 61, there appears to have been some changes to where he was to be discharged. An initial entry indicated that his parents wished for him to be discharged in South Africa as his future residence would be in England, suggesting that is where he was born. It notes the Qld Premier had agreed to the request having issued before leaving (South Africa).
The Boer War Service Paybook entry contains an address in England c/- Ava Whitford, London, which was subsequently crossed out. The entry for his actual discharge indicates he sailed with the rest of the 6th QIB aboard Devon back to Australia and was discharged in Brisbane on 23 Jun 1902, after which he was granted a pass to travel to Toowoomba.
