Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When William Alexander Wightman enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father John Wightman, Allora.

William Alexander Wightman was born on 6 Mar 1880 in Queensland, a son to John Wightman and Mary Wightman (nee McMillan). He married Bertha Bauer on 6 Feb 1906 in Queensland. Bertha had been previously married with 5 children and at the time of their marriage was the Licensed Victualler for the Prince Alfred Hotel at Gundiah. The hotel was owned by her first husband Benedict Bauer who passed in 1904. William and Bertha held the license for, and lived at, the hotel throughout their marriage with William predeceasing Bertha in 1911.
