Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Mathew Wilmot was originally from Victoria and it is unclear why he was in Queensland when he enlisted in the 3rd Queensland Contingent to serve in the South African (Boer) War. Apparently an outdoors man who had various occupations including horse breaking, carting and mining, he was likely in Queensland for work.

While serving in South Africa Mathew was taken ill with Malarial Fever and debility and spent time in hospitals in Bloemfontein and Woodstock. His situation not improving he was shipped to England where he convalesced for 3 months during which time he met a English lady and they married on 4 Jul 1901, just prior to his return to Australia.

On 6 Jul 1901 Mathew and his new bride set sail from England aboard the Orizaba to return to Australia. They disembarked at Brisbane where he was discharged on 29 Aug 1901. After his discharge, Mathew and his wife relocated to settle for some time in Rockhampton. At some point he has made his way back to Victoria where he would pass away in 1919 and is intered at the Boroondara (Kew) General Cemetery in Kew, Victoria.
