William George Window was born on 10 Jul 1864 at Horsley, Gloucestershire, England, a son to Henry Window and Sarah Window (nee Richardts). When he enlisted with the 5th QIB in 1901 he noted his N.O.K. as his father H. Window at Horsley, Gloucestershire, England. He married Cecilia Burke on 16 Sep 1917 and they had 3 children.

After ariving in Queensland he pursued work as a miner in various parts of the state before settling in the Blair Athol district working in gold mines and lastly at the coal mine.
