Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey
Note- Arthur William Woodard is also recorded on service documents as Arthur Woodard. He served twice in the South African (Boer) war. First service was as a Private S.N. 225 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry. Second service was as a Private S.N. 625 in the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen (1st Draft). The AWM Nominal Roll compiled by Murray records him as Arthur William Woodard for his first service and Arthur Woodard for his second service. The Boer War Service Paybooks for each service records him as Arthur Woodard.
When he joined the 3rd QMI in 1900 and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 3 Mar 1900, he noted he was residing at Light St, Bowen Hills. He served the full tour of the 3rd QMI and was discharged in Brisbane in Jun 1901.
Not long after he was selected in the First Draft of the 6th QIB and embarked again for South Africa in Aug 1901. The members of the draft mainly consisted of men who had served in previous contingents in South Africa and were assembled as reinforcements for the 5th and 6th QIB contingents already in South Africa. Men in the draft were not recorded in the original nominal roll for the 6th QIB. He was, however, recorded in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB (to which he was allotted), Bk 4 p. 63.
Newspaper reports note when the 5th QIB returned to Australia a number of men remained in South Africa for various reasons including for further service. The Brisbane Courier, 16 May 1902, notes when the 5th QIB embarked to return to Australia that, S.N. 625, Private Arthur Woodward, remained in South Africa for further service. The paybooks note he returned to Brisbane and was discharged in Aug 1902, and that his address post discharge was c/- Pilot Station, Bulwer, Moreton Island.

Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey
Note- after completing the previous biography it has been revealed that his birth was recorded as Arthur Edwin Woodard and that he later assumed, or changed, to the name John Ryan who went on to serve in WW1. Reference should be made to the biography on VWMA profile for John Ryan S.N. 1982, 50th Infantry Battalion AIF, WW1, for information as to how this was arrived at.
