James Wright served twice in the South African (Boer) War, first as a Private S.N. 181 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, and second as a Private S.N. 456 in the 7th Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse (source AWM Boer War Nominal Roll, Murray p. 470 & 540; National Archives Australia Boer War Dossier 2nd service).
