Served in both the South African (Boer) war and WW1. First service was as a Corporal S.N. 42, 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private S.N. 3372, 2nd Light Horse Regiment AIF, WW1.
His younger brother, Allan Malcolm Wylie S.N. 43, also served with him in the 5th QIB, Boer war.
When James Wylie enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father J. M. Wylie, Eudlo, North Coast Line. In the original nominal roll for the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives, his father was recorded as James M. Wylie.
He enlisted again in 1917 at Townsville, while living at Innisfail, for WW1. On his Attestation Paper, dated 10 Feb 1917, it is noted that; he was born at Brisbane and was 38 years 9 months old; he was married and working as a Tinsmith; he had been apprenticed to J. M. Wylie, East Brisbane; his N.O.K. was his wife Mrs. Sarah Wylie, Innisfail; and he had previously served with the 5th QIB in South Africa.
James Wylie was born on 16 May 1877 at Brisbane, a son to James Malcolm Wylie and Isabella Wylie (nee Wallace). He married Sarah Burdekin Wilson (nee O'Keefe) in Queensland and they had 2 children while living in the Innisfail/Atherton Tablelands district.
